As of today, playschool for the 2010-2011 school year has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Thank you to all our former parents and Board Members for making this last year a great one!

To Register for school next year, you can do one of the following:

1. Email lakewoodplayschool@gmail.com with your contact information and someone from the Board will contact you.

2. Call the school at (780) 465-2097 and someone from the Board will get back to you.

3. Come to our Open House on August 10th (6:30 to 8:30pm).

Check out this post for all the cheques required upon registration. You can also Download the Registration Booklet and fill it out so you're spending less time on paper work at the Open House!!

If you ever have any questions, please give us a call or shoot us an email.

Teacher Shannon is running some Kindergarten prep camps this summer, so you can also call the school for more information on those. They run in August, and sound like they are going to be so much fun...with some learning thrown in for good measure!

so I haven't been here! This is a busy time of year for us at school...only a couple of weeks left to go and lots of things going on!

We have a little "grad" ceremony planned for both classes, so parents can drop their wee-ones off at the regular time, then join us after 10am for the festivities.

Our next Board Meeting is coming up on Tuesday May 11th at 7pm. We meet in the classroom, and everyone is welcome. You can even bring the kids! We will be finalizing some details for the Year End party, and discussing the final month of classes!

Registration Information 2010-2011

The following 15 cheques are required upon registration

Registration fee: $35 (non-refundable)

Duty Day fee: 2 cheques of $30 each (undated)
- To be returned at end of year if you complete all your duty days.
- If one duty day is missed, one cheque will be cashed. If both cheques are cashed, parents will have to replace those with new cheques.

Fundraising fee: 3 cheques of $50 each (undated)
- To be returned at the end of the year provided fundraising obligations have been fulfilled.
- Our playschool completes three fundraisers each school year. If you do not complete the minimum requirements of a fundraiser, one cheque will be cashed.
- Withdrawing your child without fulfilling fundraising obligations will result in cashing this cheque.

Monthly fees: 8 cheques, dated for the 1st of each month
- Dated for the first of the each month starting from October through May
- Deposited by the 5th of each month

- fees subject to change with each school year

September/June fee: $160 (T/Th) $200 (MWF)
- First and last month's fees are combined and non-refundable

- FEES SUBJECT TO CHANGE FOR 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR

Please bring all required cheques to either Open House to register your child. Please note that we will not register your child without at least the Registration Deposit. Please make cheques payable to Lakewood Community Playschool.

Additional Information

Community League Membership $25
If you have already purchased a 2010/2011 Community League Membership, please bring your Membership Card to registration with you. If you don't have one, they will be available to purchase at each Open House. Every child registered in playschool must have a current Community League Membership. Even if you are NOT in the Lakewood Community League we can sell you a Membership for your Community League.

The first of these is for information on the Child Care Subsidy offered by the Government of Alberta. Please note that the best place for information on child care subsidy, and the status of any application you have made is always through the government. Due to privacy reasons, Playschool does not receive any information about the claim until we get a cheque (or not).

Hi Parents!

I have been getting a lot of emails asking about registration for next year, and the date of our first Open House. Thanks for the interest!

Our first Open House and Registration

Date: Monday April 19th

Time: 6:30 - 8:30pm

Where: The Classroom (lower level, 260 Lakewood Road East)

We will not be accepting any registrations before the Open House, so please attend if you have any questions or would like to reserve a spot for your son or daughter. Please check out this post for more Registration details.

We will have another Open House closer to the beginning of the school year, probably in August. I will post more information here when we know that date.

If you ever have any questions that aren't answered here, please call the school or email us. We are happy to help!

Our March Board Meeting is on Tuesday March 9th at 7pm in the classroom. If you have any questions or comments for our Board, please attend!

It's seems like it's been forever since I was last here...but I'm back!

Tonight (January 19, 2010)
Lakewood Community League meeting
7pm, in the main floor room of the Hall

I hope to have the minutes from our last Board meeting up by the end of the week. We talked about Field Trips, a Valentine's Day party, and our upcoming fundraiser (yummy cookies!). Watch backpacks in the next week or so for more on that!

More importantly, the Community League is sending home a letter with your kids this week. Please read through this letter and if you have any concerns you can address them directly to the League. I'm posting some contact information in the classroom and watch for a new "Suggestion Box" to show up sometime soon as well. The League is responsible for funding the playschool and making sure everything is running smoothly. They have some concerns and would like to see them addressed, but I'm sure they would love to hear about all the great things Playschool has to offer as well!

I know that my son has been having a blast so far this year, and I hope that you feel the same about your child! It's hard to believe we're in the home stretch now, and soon will be planning year end parties and next year's registrations. How time flies!!

November Meeting

Our November Board meeting was the shortest ever! But we still managed to cover a lot of topics. I will post the full minutes on the side bar of the blog soon, but for now here are some important points to look over!

We are still looking for someone to fill our Fundraiser position on the Board. The Board meets once a month for about an hour, and in this position you are responsible for planning & implementing two more fundraisers this year. Fundraisers help the Playschool with offsetting the costs of fieldtrips and other fun extras for the kids!Please see Angel (MWF) or talk to Teacher Shannon about it, and we will get you some more information on the position and the small commitment required.

Fundraiser forms for the Mundare Sausage are due tomorrow, November 19th. Please turn them in at school to Teacher Shannon or Lareina.

We're getting all the details set for our Holiday Parties at school. They are scheduled for the last day of classes before the break: Thursday, December 17 for the T-Th class and Friday, December 18th for the MWF class. Our Special Events Coordinator will send home snack requests, before the parties, and parents are welcome to stay for the fun!

Our next Board meeting was changed to Tuesday, December 1st. All parents are welcome! If you are interested in volunteering on the Board, or have any questions or concerns please attend the meeting!

Hello Parents!

Thanks to all the parents who attended the Mandatory Parent Meeting held on the 16th. I know we were missing a lot of people, so expect some more information to come home with your child in the next week or so. We discussed Duty Day responsibilities, and recruited for our Board, which I am happy to say is now full! If you were unable to attend, please speak with one of the Board Members in your class so we can get you up-to-date!!

Our first Board Meeting went very well last week...I would like to welcome our newest Members: Delorese, Patrycja, Kim, Tricia, Melissa, Tony & Cindy. I look forward to working with you in the coming months!

We discussed, among other things, fundraising, field trips, parties and playschool policy. Look to the Bulletin Board in the Classroom this week for the full minutes!

That's all for this week. The next big things on our calendar are:
- Mundare Sausage Fundraiser. Check backpacks for forms to come home in October.
- Halloween Parties
- Our First Field Trip! Once we know all the details (where, when and how to get there) we will pass them along to you!

Open House and Registration

Please join us at the school on August 26th to register your little one for school this year! Board Members will be on hand from 7 to 9pm to answer your questions and help you with the registration process. And since we can't keep her away, Teacher Shannon is coming to meet her potential students and answer any questions you might have about our school.

When you register we give you an Information Package that has all of your responsibilities listed within, including Duty Day information, discipline policy, rules and regulations for the playschool, our Learning Philosophy and more. If you have questions about anything within the Information Package, please ask!

Remember, when registering your child for playschool, we require you to provide the following:

Teacher's Message

My name is Shannon Keats and I have the privilege of being the teacher here at Lakewood Community Playschool. I have 6 years teaching experience both in Early Childhood as well as Kindergarten. I believe that Playschool is your child’s first school experience and should be an amazing one! It should be a place where they can feel safe, loved, and encouraged to explore the world around them. All children learn at different paces, and it’s my goal to provide an environment where they can develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually….and have ‘tons of fun’ while they are doing it!!

I would love to have your child join our Lakewood family. I believe in an open door policy, so if you ever have any questions, please feel free to give me a call or come and visit! Come and see all the learning and fun that is happening in our classroom!

Only Two Weeks Left!

Wow...it's amazing how fast time flies! To think that our little guys are almost done Playschool, yet it seems like only yesterday that they started!

We have a great month of fun things planned! Our Tuesday/Thursday class was at Safety City last week for their last field trip of the year. The kids have been learning about caterpillars and butterflies in class, and even got to release some into the wild! Ooh! Aah!

Thursday is our big end-of-year celebration! There will be a bouncy castle, food and lots of fun! Parents are always welcome to join us! And remember this is a combined classes party, so there is no class on Friday.

Next Thursday and Friday are our Graduation Ceremonies! Parents, grandparents, and special friends are welcome to join us at 10:15 am for the celebration. Otherwise, playschool starts as usual at 9am. And this is our last class of the year, so if you're moving on to Kindergarten and beyond, it was good to know you and good luck! And if you're sticking around for another year, see you in the Fall!!

Open House SUCCESS!!

The Open House was a complete success last night!! We had a lot of parents stop by with their children to register for next year's classes. It was great to see all the new faces exploring and playing in our classroom...the rice table was such a hit, we spent an hour after the Open House cleaning up the fun!

The Monday, Wednesday, Friday class for our older children was the most popular choice by far, and spots filled up fast. There is still a lot of availability in the Tuesday/Thursday class for 3-4 year old. Please call the Playschool for specific information on availability for each class.

If you haven't already registered for the 2009/2010 school year and you would like more information, please call the Playschool and our Registrar Cherlynn or someone else from the Board will get back to you as soon as we can! Busy Busy!

What a productive Board Meeting! Here are some of the things we discussed:

Keep an eye out in the next month or so for Playschool Surveys. We want to know how you think the Playschool is doing! How you like the program, how your kids like the program, and anything we can improve upon for the upcoming school year. These are completely anonymous, and much appreciated!

We have an Open House coming up next week, April 22nd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Bring your cheques and register your child(ren) for next year!

We are having a Garage Sale on Saturday May 2nd in our parking lot. All the proceeds are going to the Playschool. If you have anything you would like to donate, please ask Teacher Shannon or one of the Board Members. We will also need parent volunteers, so any time you can donate will be much appreciated!

In conjunction with our Garage Sale is our final Fundraiser for the year: Make A Plate. This has been a huge hit in year's past and we are hoping for a large turnout from the community to help us out! It will run on May 2nd, from 10am to 5pm. Watch for sign up sheets both to volunteer to help the kids decorate their plates, and to let us know how many plates you want!

Oh, and what's with the snow today? What happened to Spring?!?!?
